Skeleton Gorge
About This Hike
Skeleton Gorge is Table Mountain at its most lush and otherworldly. Starting from the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden side of the mountain, the route climbs through one of the last remaining patches of indigenous Afromontane forest in the Western Cape — a world of towering yellowwoods, mossy boulders, and the sound of running water following you all the way to the top.
The name sounds dramatic, but the route is one of the more accessible ways onto the summit plateau. Wooden ladders and boardwalks carry you through the steepest section of the gorge, making it manageable for most fitness levels while keeping the sense of real mountain adventure fully intact.
Arriving at the summit via this route feels different to any other way up. You emerge from forest into open sky above the cloud line — the contrast is one of the most striking moments on any of our hikes. From the top, you can either descend the way you came or take the cable car down for a completely different perspective.

Important Notes
The wooden ladder section requires you to be comfortable climbing at height, but is not technically demanding. This route is suitable for older children (10+) and most fitness levels. The gorge floor can be slippery after rain — sturdy footwear is essential.
